Tech Term of the Month - June 2025: ATM Skimmer

Have you ever heard of an ATM skimmer? It's a nefarious device that scammers can attach to an ATM to steal your card info when you insert your debit or credit card to get cash.
Here's how to spot one and stay vigilant against scammers:
- If the card reader is loose or oddly bulky
- There may be a hidden camera nearby pointing at the card reader to try and capture the number and/or PIN
- The keypad may feel thicker or off-center in the buttons' alignment
How to keep yourself safe:
- Always cover the keypad with your off hand while entering your PIN
- Try to stick to using ATMs in well-lit and secure locations - banks are the safest
- Wiggle the card reader and don't use it if it moves around
If you've fallen victim to a skimmer:
- Contact your bank immediately and freeze or cancel your card
- Monitor your account for unauthorized transactions
- File a report with the police
