What is SPAM?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail_spam
Spam is junk email or unsolicited bulk email. It is also known as unsolicited commercial email.
How do I deal with spam?
Utilize programs that check for black listings, use blacklists, include built in junk email folders in programs such as Outlook, have a mail server that checks white/black listing, that electronically verify the domain the email is originating from is legit, configured correctly and is fully verified. Make use of user configurable filters available in email client software.
How can I prevent getting a virus on my computer?
There are many, many different ways to prevent getting viruses. One way is to call BCT about SecureIT or by running an updated version of a known antivirus program. Other ways include avoiding the use of programs such as kazaa, limewire, napster, rhapsody, going to sites such as “Fixmycomputer.com, or PCMATIC.COM” clicking on ads, popup messages, not forwarding already forwarded messages from a chain of people otherwise known as “Chain Mail” or opening attachments from an email you don’t know what it is or who it is from.
Why do I see errors in the emails I send or receive?
There are literally over 50 different reasons why you would receive this message. If you are using a program such as Outlook or Outlook Express or Windows Live Mail it could be the program is not configured properly, you could be disconnected from the Internet, the mail server is not responding for some reason or another, or you could have a firewall that is preventing connection.
Why isn’t my Internet working?
There are too many reasons to list here. Typical issues are – your modem is not synced up with the DSLAM. Typical causes for no sync issues are – phone cable is over 10 feet long, you have dialtone but no DSL filters installed on your telephone devices, you have a satellite dish receiver and you do not have a filter on that device, you have a fax or a burglar alarm and they are not filtered. If you have continuing issues please call our Internet Support line at 503-632-HELP (4357).
Does anyone have to visit my house to set-up my Internet?
Not typically. The modem is a “Self install kit” There is no need for a tech to come and install the modem. There are 3 connections on a standard DSL modem: 1) Phone 2) Ethernet 3) Power.
Can I get broadband Internet without having a phone line?
You do not have to have telephone service with DSL however; you do have to have everything needed to have a phone line at the house (except for physical phones). The wiring must be in good repair, have a good phone jack wired correctly with no defects, broken wires, etc.
I can’t get my emails, but I’m able to pull up web pages, what’s going on?
Typical issues are caused by software firewalls that are blocking the port that email comes in on which is TCP 110. Common problems with software firewalls are usually generated by some sort of automatic update that came down and installed itself now your firewall is not working correctly. Someone accidently blocked the incoming email port, your email client is not working properly, or the email client is not configured properly.
Why does it take a long time for Internet explorer to come up? Also, why do the pop-ups that I want to let through get blocked?
Many issues can cause this. Common issues include: there are too many toolbars loaded. Toolbars as they load take priority and update themselves before anything else happens. Your machine could not have enough memory so it takes a bit longer to process everything. Your circuit could be having issues with syncing or your modem could be going bad.
What is WiFi?
WiFi is literally having a network connection without the wires. WiFi can have issues with interference and is not a constant connection. It is also limited by distance and needs a “line-of-sight” path to work effectively. 2.4 GHz cordless phones can cause problems, especially if there are more than three cordless phones or other 2.4 GHz devices within a 100-foot radius.
What is a modem?
Modem, short for modulator-demodulator is an electronic device that converts a computer’s digital signals into specific frequencies to travel over telephone lines. At the destination, the receiving modem demodulates the frequencies back into digital data. Computers use modems to communicate with one another over a network.
How do I install DSL?
Plug the power pack into the power receptacle to give the modem power. Plug the phone cable DIRECTLY into the phone jack with nothing in between with the shortest phone cable possible preferably the phone cable that came in the kit. Plug the Ethernet cable into either the PC or a secondary device such a router.
